When Is Father’s Day?

The United States will observe Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19th, 2016. The United States always observes Father’s Day the third Sunday in June.

What Is Father’s Day?

Wikipedia says, “Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fathers and male parenting.”

Who started Father’s Day?

Like most annual observations, the origins of Father’s Day are clouded in mystery. Some say it originated in the Old World thousands of years ago, only to die and then be resurrected from time to time. But as far as the origins of the modern observation of Fathers’ Day, most historians are in agreement. Grace Golden Clayton was still mourning the loss of her father in December, 1907, when a tremendous mining disaster took the lives of 361 men in and around her community. This left around 1,000 children with no father. Perhaps inspired by the recent inception of Mother’s Day, she suggested that her pastor should recognize all those fathers in a sermon. Thus, the first known American observance of Father’s Day was held on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virgina at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South.

Over the next few years, several different parties in a handful of different communities contributed to propel the idea forward. One person, in particular stands out as the one who carried the sentiment across the finish-line. Sonora L. S. Dodd heard a sermon in 1909 about Mother’s Day and she told her pastor in Spokane Washington that fathers should have their own day, like Mother’s Day. Several religious leaders in the community accepted her suggestion and gave sermons honoring fathers on June 19, 1910. Many consider this day as the first city-wide Father’s Day Celebration. Ms. Dodd’s efforts to promote Father’s Day gradually lost momentum and the vision slowly faded away. Then, in the 30’s, Ms. Dodd resumed her promotion of Father’s Day in Spokane. This time however, her message reached the national level. It gained the support of national organizations who ran with it. Soon, it was being mentioned in scores of newspapers.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, President Nixon in 1972 made it a permanent national holiday.

Since its creation in the U.S., Father’s Day has become a recognized day in many other countries as well, where it may fall on the same day or date every year, or calendared in association with another holiday like Ascension Day, St. Joseph’s Day, or the birthday of a national figure.

All over the world, we celebrate Father’s Day to recognize and reflect on the courageous contributions of Fathers and Father figures to our society as a whole, and to each of us individually, and to personally honor them with our sentiments, to share our love and gratitude, and to honor their selfless sacrifices on our behalf with a gesture of appreciation and celebration.

What Do I Do For Father’s Day?

Primarily, make it meaningful. Whether it’s small or extravagant, material gifts, or service, or simply spending a good visit together, make it a heart-felt expression of your affection to the unique person that your father is.

In addition to letting your own Father know that he is loved, it’s also an occasion to reach out to others’ Fathers as well. Let your Father-in-law know that he is loved and appreciated. Go out to dinner with your brother who may have lost custody of his children in a difficult divorce. Maybe two weeks before Father’s Day you could contact the estranged child of a loved-one and convince him that it wouldn’t hurt to do a little something for his dad on this one day.

To make Father’s Day special, give him time, sit and talk, maybe have a picnic. The little ones could prepare breakfast in bed. Make a phone call, enjoy time together, have a family get-together.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate Father’s Day, ultimately the best possible result of our Father’s Day observance is that something might grow inside each of us, that we’ll feel more, that we’ll have an increase in love, and that we’ll resolve to do more.
